The Iranian President, Masoud Pezeshkian, has expressed a desire to strengthen ties with the United Arab Emirates (UAE) after meeting with Abu Dhabi’s Crown Prince Khaled bin Mohamed during the BRICS Summit in New Delhi. The leaders discussed the importance of moving past historical disagreements to foster a more robust relationship between their nations. This dialogue occurs against a backdrop of ongoing regional tensions, prompting countries to seek improved cooperation on security and maritime routes.
In a bid to enhance regional security, Iran will engage in discussions with Gulf countries and Iraq in Oman on September 14, with a particular focus on the Strait of Hormuz. The aim of these talks is to promote better understanding among regional nations and reinforce collective security measures. However, Bahrain has opted out of participating in these discussions.
President Pezeshkian also advocated for intensified economic collaboration among BRICS nations, calling for increased use of national currencies in trade and the development of enhanced financial mechanisms. He highlighted that the reliance on existing global financial and trade systems can expose emerging economies to political and economic vulnerabilities. By strengthening economic resilience, he contended, BRICS members could better resist unilateral sanctions and attacks on civilian infrastructure.
Pezeshkian emphasized Iran’s potential contributions to BRICS through its strategic location, energy resources, and transit networks, which could facilitate the development of trade and energy corridors connecting BRICS economies. These diplomatic initiatives are taking place amid escalating tensions in the Strait of Hormuz, underscoring the importance of regional dialogue and cooperation for ensuring security and the stability of global energy supplies.
