Diplomatic interactions between the UAE and Germany were officially established in 1972, and since then, their bilateral relationship has grown considerably. A key component of this partnership is the thriving trade and investment exchanges, which saw their bilateral trade surpass Dh57 billion ($15.52 billion) last year, positioning the UAE as Germany’s top trading partner in the Gulf region.
Approximately 2,000 German businesses have set up operations in the UAE, including well-known corporations like BMW, Siemens, ThyssenKrupp, and Deutsche Bahn. Their cooperation has notably expanded into the energy sector, where they collaborate on renewable energy projects, climate action, and efforts to enhance decarbonization and energy security. In 2022, both countries cemented their commitment to energy collaboration by signing an agreement aimed at bolstering energy security and industrial cooperation. This agreement includes provisions for UAE to supply liquefied natural gas to Germany and to engage in joint projects centered on clean energy and climate initiatives.
Beyond trade and energy, the UAE and Germany have maintained long-standing cooperation in research, technology, infrastructure, and cultural exchange programs. Their political relationship reached a new level in 2004 when they formalized a strategic partnership agreement. This agreement covers various areas including regional security, economic cooperation, and joint research endeavors, further solidifying their collaborative framework.
