The United Arab Emirates is observing a period of mourning following the death of Sheikh Ahmed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, a notable figure in the country’s development and brother to Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Dubai’s Ruler. Sheikh Ahmed passed away on Monday and was laid to rest at the Umm Hurair Cemetery in Dubai, following funeral prayers held at Zabeel Grand Mosque. In the wake of his funeral, UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, along with the Rulers and Crown Princes of the Emirates, visited Sheikh Mohammed to offer their sympathies. The gathering took place at the Zabeel Majlis, highlighting the high regard in which Sheikh Ahmed was held.
The leaders who extended their condolences included Sheikh Dr Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi of Sharjah, Sheikh Hamad bin Mohammed Al Sharqi of Fujairah, Sheikh Saud bin Rashid Al Mualla of Umm Al Quwain, and Sheikh Saud bin Saqr Al Qasimi of Ras Al Khaimah. They collectively remembered Sheikh Ahmed for his enduring service to the UAE, a legacy that stretches back to the country’s formative years.
Sheikh Ahmed’s influence was felt across various sectors. He served as the deputy chairman of Dubai Police and was the chairman of ARM Holding. His enthusiasm for sports was evident through his role in establishing the Jebel Ali Racecourse in 1990 and his long-term presidency of Al Wasl Sports Club. Following Sheikh Ahmed’s passing, a 10-day mourning period has been declared in Dubai, allowing citizens and residents to pay their respects and reflect on his impact on the nation. His legacy continues to inspire, marking him as a pivotal figure in the UAE’s modern history.
