Global Oil Emergency Declared as Trump Says He’s Fighting a Nuclear War Not an Oil War

The International Energy Agency declared a global oil emergency Thursday, recording the worst supply shock in market history as President Trump insisted he is fighting a nuclear war, not an oil war. In a Truth Social post, Trump stated that preventing Iran from developing nuclear weapons is “far greater” in importance than the oil price crisis. He called Iran an “evil Empire” and pledged to stop it from crossing the nuclear threshold regardless of the energy market consequences. The distinction between a nuclear war and an oil war has significant strategic implications.

Gulf producers have cut output by approximately 10 million barrels per day — close to 10% of world demand. Brent crude gained as much as 10% Thursday to briefly exceed $100 per barrel. West Texas Intermediate approached $96 before easing. The IEA deployed 400 million barrels from member nations’ emergency reserves, and the US committed 172 million barrels from its Strategic Petroleum Reserve.

Trump’s Truth Social post made the nuclear war framing explicit. America earns more when oil prices rise — that is the economic reality, he acknowledged. But his fight is not about oil. It is about preventing Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons that could destroy the Middle East and the world. He pledged to never allow this to happen, framing the conflict as a nuclear security mission with global consequences.

The distinction between a nuclear war and an oil war matters for how the conflict is understood, conducted, and ultimately concluded. A nuclear war ends when nuclear security is achieved, not when oil prices stabilize. This means the conflict will continue until Iran’s nuclear program is eliminated or verifiably contained. Trump reinforced this on Wednesday, confirming that US forces are not finished with Iran.

Trump dismissed concerns about Iranian attacks on American soil. The global oil emergency continues without diplomatic resolution. By insisting he is fighting a nuclear war, Trump has set a strategic standard that oil market interventions alone cannot satisfy.
