The United States has unveiled a set of new tariffs targeting specific drones and their components, with rates reaching as high as 100%. These measures are justified by the US government on grounds of national security and the desire to reduce reliance on foreign supply chains largely controlled by China. The focus of these tariffs is on unmanned aircraft systems, particularly larger drones exceeding 25 kilograms, and those equipped with national security-sensitive features such as thermal cameras and docking stations. These will be subjected to a 100% tariff, whereas smaller drones will incur a 25% tariff.
Additionally, the US is extending tariffs to drones and components imported from several key trading partners. Imports from the European Union, Japan, Liechtenstein, South Korea, Switzerland, and Taiwan will be met with a 15% tariff. In contrast, products originating from the United Kingdom will face a 10% tariff, provided the hardware, software, and technology are developed within the mentioned countries or the US. These tariffs are set to be implemented on September 3.
The White House has articulated that the imposition of these tariffs aims to fortify the US defense and industrial base. By encouraging domestic production of drones, the administration hopes to generate American jobs and lessen dependency on international suppliers. The Chinese company DJI, based in Shenzhen, dominates the global drone market and holds a significant share of the US commercial drone sector. This has led to previous US restrictions on DJI due to national security worries.
US authorities have raised concerns that drones manufactured abroad could be used for surveillance, unauthorized data collection, or even potential attacks. The US Federal Communications Commission has previously advocated for increased domestic drone production to mitigate these risks. The recent tariff announcement occurs amidst ongoing trade and technology disputes between Washington and Beijing. In response, China has imposed its own restrictions on drone exports to the US and has taken action against several American firms.
