From G7 to G2: US and Russia Bypass Allies in Direct Energy Talks

by admin477351

The United States and Russia appear to be bypassing broader allied frameworks like the G7 to engage in direct, G2-style negotiations over energy and security. This bilateral approach is unfolding as India, a key partner in many multilateral forums, faces unilateral US tariffs.

The sanctions against Russia were largely a coordinated effort among G7 nations and other allies, designed to present a united front. The current US talks with Russia, however, appear to be a unilateral initiative driven by the White House’s specific goals.

These direct discussions, which include potentially game-changing deals for Exxon Mobil and Russian LNG projects, sideline the European allies who have also made significant economic sacrifices to maintain pressure on Moscow.

This approach, combined with the punitive 50% tariffs now imposed on India, suggests a preference for unilateral action and bilateral deal-making over the slower, more consensual process of alliance management. It risks alienating key partners and undermining the very multilateral order the US has historically championed.
