The baton has been passed at Spotify. Founder Daniel Ek, who has conducted the company’s meteoric rise for nearly two decades, is moving to the role of executive chairman. The day-to-day leadership will now be in the hands of Gustav Söderström and Alex Norström, who have been appointed co-CEOs.
The transition, effective January 1st, is the culmination of a gradual shift in responsibilities. As co-presidents, Söderström and Norström have been leading much of Spotify’s operational and strategic direction since 2023, making them the natural successors to the top job.
Spotify’s announcement emphasized that this move is a formalization of the current state of affairs. Ek himself confirmed this, stating, “This change simply matches titles to how we already operate,” ensuring a message of stability and continuity for the streaming giant.
As executive chairman, Ek will take on a new mission: to focus on the company’s “long arc.” He will be an active chairman, guiding Spotify’s long-term vision, pushing for innovation in areas like AI, and overseeing the company’s expansion into new global markets.
