The recent state visit of UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan to Germany underscores the robust and growing strategic alliance between the two nations, a relationship nurtured over many years through comprehensive political, economic, energy, and cultural collaborations. Established in 1972, diplomatic relations between the United Arab Emirates and Germany have flourished, with significant advancements in trade and investment sectors. In the previous year, bilateral trade amounted to Dh57 billion ($15.52 billion), positioning the UAE as Germany’s foremost trading partner within the Gulf region.
Presently, approximately 2,000 German companies, including renowned enterprises like BMW, Siemens, ThyssenKrupp, and Deutsche Bahn, are operating in the UAE. The collaboration extends into the energy sector, where both nations are actively involved in initiatives concerning renewable energy, climate action, decarbonization, and energy security. A pivotal agreement was signed in 2022, aiming to bolster energy security and industrial cooperation. This includes provisions for UAE’s liquefied natural gas supplies to Germany and joint endeavors targeting clean energy and climate goals.
Beyond the realms of trade and energy, the UAE and Germany have cultivated enduring partnerships in research, technology, infrastructure, and cultural exchanges. Political ties reached a new level in 2004 when both countries formalized a strategic partnership agreement. This accord encompasses various domains, including regional security, economic collaboration, and research, further cementing their shared objectives.
Despite facing global political and economic hurdles, the relationship between the UAE and Germany remains resilient. Both countries are committed to expanding their cooperation across vital strategic sectors, reinforcing their partnership’s strength and adaptability in a rapidly changing world.
