When you take your pet into the great outdoors, you take on the responsibility of protecting that natural space. Adhering to “Leave No Trace” principles ensures that these beautiful areas remain pristine for wildlife and future visitors.
Dispose of waste properly. This is the most important and non-negotiable rule. Pet waste is not a natural fertilizer; it can contaminate water sources and spread disease to wildlife. Always pack more than enough poop bags and carry the waste out with you until you find a proper trash receptacle.
Stay on durable surfaces. Keep your pet on marked trails to avoid trampling delicate vegetation and causing erosion. This also minimizes their contact with potentially harmful plants or wildlife and reduces the chance of them picking up ticks.
Respect wildlife and other visitors. Never allow your pet to chase, bark at, or interact with wildlife. This is incredibly stressful for the animals and can be dangerous for your pet. Similarly, maintain control of your pet around other hikers, yielding the trail and keeping them close to ensure a positive experience for everyone.
