Dubai is planning to revolutionize passenger transit at its Al Maktoum International Airport with the introduction of a 50-kilometer autonomous people mover network. This innovative underground driverless rail system is designed to navigate the expansive airport through nine initial stations, with construction projected to conclude by December 2031. The launch of the airport’s first phase is scheduled for 2032, and future expansions will see the network grow to 14 stations as the airport continues to develop.
Positioned to become the world’s largest automated people mover, the system at Al Maktoum International Airport will dwarf currently existing airport networks, including those at Dallas Fort Worth and New York’s JFK airports. Upon full completion, the airport aims to accommodate a staggering 260 million passengers and handle up to 12 million tonnes of cargo annually. The first phase alone, featuring the West Terminal and Concourse 1 alongside the people mover system, will boost the airport’s annual passenger capacity to 130 million.
Beyond just facilitating movement within the airport, the people mover will be part of a broader transportation strategy aimed at enhancing connectivity throughout the region. Plans include an Airport Express Link, designed to seamlessly connect Al Maktoum International Airport with Dubai International Airport. Additionally, future integration with Etihad Rail and the Dubai Metro is anticipated, further embedding the airport into the region’s transport infrastructure.
