UAE and Saudi Arabia Strengthen Alliance Against Houthi Gains in Yemen

by admin477351

The ongoing conflict in Yemen has seen a renewed alliance between the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Saudi Arabia, as both nations coordinate efforts against Houthi rebel advances. The UAE has reportedly agreed to resume financial backing for Yemeni government forces, while Saudi Arabia is set to provide air support to the anti-Houthi coalition. This collaboration comes in response to growing concerns over Houthi military gains and increasing regional attacks.

The renewed cooperation between the UAE and Saudi Arabia suggests a potential thaw in relations that had been strained by disagreements over Yemen’s political future and the involvement of southern separatist forces. Previously, the UAE had withdrawn its support in January after having trained and funded several southern military units, including the Giant Brigades.

Saudi Arabia has been a frequent target of drone and missile attacks attributed to the Houthis, which have specifically targeted its airports and energy infrastructure. In response, Yemen’s internationally recognized government has launched a counteroffensive to reclaim key territories, such as areas near Marib and the strategic Bab al-Mandab Strait. However, the progress of these efforts remains limited.

Tensions have escalated in Aden, where a Houthi missile strike reportedly occurred near the city’s airport as a passenger aircraft was preparing for take-off. This incident followed another missile strike on a presidential palace, resulting in at least five fatalities and 16 injuries.

The conflict has heightened regional security concerns, prompting Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi to suggest potential defensive measures in support of Saudi Arabia. Meanwhile, the United Kingdom is contemplating additional military assistance in response to requests.

As the Saudi-UAE coordination strengthens, the humanitarian crisis in Yemen continues to worsen. According to the United Nations, more than 200,000 people have been displaced since August, further straining the efforts of humanitarian organizations operating in the region.
